The Swedish Vallund is a great dog which has been recently introduced to the UK. You may see some of them in Suffolk (Bury St Edmunds), where there is a loyal band of Swedish Vallhund fanciers.
The Swedish Vallhund was bred in the first place for herding cattle. It looks a bit like a Cardigan Corgi except that the Swedish Vallhund has pointed ears and most often is a brindle colour ... in fact when we first took our Swedish Vallhund to the vets in Bury St Edmunds they wanted to know what colour it was and we said "Swedish Vallhund coloured.". We finally decided that all Swedish Vallhunds are cream and charcoal brindle.
Bury St Edmunds has a strong Swedish Vallhund fanciers association, please feel free to contact us to find out how to become involved.
There is an ongoing argument about the origins of Swedish Vallhunds: Corgi fanciers say that the Vikings stole them from the Welsh, but Swedish Vallhund fanciers say the Vikings brought them over to the UK and the Welsh then stole them. I'm sure the argument is perfectly amicable.
We have noticed that some Swedish Vallhunds have some odd behaviour characteristics that we are told are common to the breed. Ours lies down on his tummy with his legs stretched out straight behind him: it's as though he was double jointed. Another is to crouch down with his legs tucked underneath him so that you cannot see even one paw. It can be used both in readiness and in moments of uncertainty, and is probably a defence mechanism against being kicked by cows.
By the way, I borrowed the picture from the UK Swedish Vallhund Society the only official Kennel Club registered Society for the breed for over 25 years. I hope you don't mind guys ... hopefully you get get a few extra hits!
